This is the second half of our series on Kiawah’s esteemed Turtle Patrol program. Another successful loggerhead nesting season on Kiawah recently concluded. This year, 345 nests were identified along the island’s rustic beachfront. Through the end of October, this buried treasure has the potential to produce approximately 30,000 baby turtles. That sounds like a lot until you realize only one in a thousand will reach adulthood.

Kiawah island is a nature-lover’s paradise and is home to 18 different species of mammals, 30-plus species of reptiles and over 300 different types of birds. Of these many cool creatures, most notable on the island are the majestic loggerhead sea turtle, the bottlenose dolphin, the elusive bobcat and finally, the oft-spotted, white-tailed deer. The island is home to several conservation efforts, and there are many ways to view our magnificent neighbors.

To welcome 2020, Timbers Kiawah – Ocean Club & Residences hosted its second annual Oyster Roast & BBQ on January 1. “This year’s oyster roast was even bigger than last year, with well over 65 Owners attending,” said Timbers Kiawah’s Chef Teddy. “On top of the raw and roasted oysters, we added a selection of our house-smoked meats, a grilling station with burgers, dogs and mahi-mahi and Chef Bobby’s award-winning Crème Brulee.”

The promise of Timbers Kiawah—which features 21 private residences total—is to bring the outdoors in, an ethos that informs the architecture and design of every exquisitely appointed bedroom and living space.
