The promise of Timbers Kiawah—which features 21 private residences total—is to bring the outdoors in, an ethos that informs the architecture and design of every exquisitely appointed bedroom and living space.

The Timbers Resorts Development & Design team collaborated with J. Banks Design Group, a Hilton Head Island, S.C.-based interior design firm, to craft the contemporary aesthetic—one unique to Kiawah Island but identifiably coastal Lowcountry.

“It was clear that Timbers Resorts wanted—and we certainly agreed—this to be unique,” said Joni Vanderslice, founder and president of J. Banks. “But we also wanted it to be very clearly coastal and Lowcountry—a new look, something that’s different, but when you walk in the door, you know you’re on the coast.”

From the moment one enters through the vibrant front door, the ocean takes center stage. The rich architectural heritage of South Carolina—evident in the wood-beamed ceilings and coastal accents—is filtered through a contemporary design sensibility and a soft, neutral color palette.

Even more, the coastal-contemporary living spaces are augmented by spacious outdoor decks overlooking the Atlantic, and the doors and windows between are expansive, blurring the lines between AC and sea breezes.

The open gathering spaces—featuring a contemporary kitchen and island and comfortable living room—are warm and inviting and at times playfully unexpected, an explicit and creative nod to the surrounding aesthetic of sand and sea.

“There is some whimsy in all this design because we wanted it to be fun,” Vanderslice said. “Just the element of surprise here and there. We wanted it not to feel too serious.”

Showcasing the works of regional artists such as Adrian Chu Redmond, living spaces funnel into high-ceilinged hallways that guide to spacious, thoughtfully crafted bedrooms and bathrooms (look out for sky-blue penny tile).

But most importantly, take time in the residences’ main living spaces and  master bedrooms to look out across the property, situated in the landscape to make the most of the natural elements— the ocean, the beach and the tall pine canopy—and absorb the island’s maritime forest just as Timbers Resorts intended for the property.
