Since the mid-‘90s, Kiawah Island Golf Resort has dedicated upward of $80 million to capital improvements to their five public championship courses—ensuring the links remain in tip-top shape for the island’s sea of avid golfers.

Most notably, to date all five courses have completed the conversion from Bermuda to Platinum Paspalum grass—a change universally praised by visitors and tour pros, including PGA Champion Rory McIlroy, who became the first golfer to win a major championship on the varietal in 2012. The hosting Ocean Course by Pete Dye was one of the first in the United States to make the transition to the seaside-friendly grass. Since then, the additional four world-class courses under Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s purview have followed suit.

We’ve provided a timeline of the last five years’ major improvements, so you can tee up in the know.

Cougar Point by Gary Player undertakes an extensive, 10-month renovation. The updates include: regrassing the greens, tees, and fairways with paspalum (like the Ocean Course), laser leveling all tee boxes including the practice range, rebuilding all bunkers and updating the course irrigation.

2016
Turtle Point by Jack Nicklaus enjoys an overhaul: The greens, tees and fairways are re-grassed to paspalum; green complexes and bunkers are rebuilt; the tee boxes are laser leveled and the course irrigation is reestablished.

2015
Oak Point by Clyde Johnston closes for six-month renovation, which includes regrassing the course with paspalum, reshaping the greens and tees and recontouring the bunkers and fairways.
