Earth Day of Kiawah

Here, nature reigns. Life on Kiawah Island revolves around the unique landscape. From the ocean to the marsh to the sand dunes to the maritime forest, Kiawah Island is home to endless acreage of untouched nature. Essentially uninhabited until 1979, Kiawah Island’s appeal lives in maintaining a balance between nature and development. The residences of Timbers Kiawah were thoughtfully situated in the landscape to make the most of the natural elements: the ocean, the beach and the tall pine canopy. We know that we are the privileged guests of the land, with turtles and deer as neighbors and the surf, breeze and birdsong our daily soundtrack.

Protecting the species and preserving Kiawah’s habitat has been an important part of the Kiawah Conservancy’s mission for over 20 years, and we were proud to team up as a sponsor of their annual Earth Day Celebration on April 18 at the Naturally Kiawah Demonstration Garden in Night Heron Park. The event highlighted the Conservancy’s mission of research, education and encouraging citizens to become leaders in environmental conservation for the benefit of all.

From petting sea turtles to releasing ladybugs in the garden, the whole family enjoyed this fun and educational day of celebrating our beautiful island and learning ways to all do our part to keep it that way.

Steel drums filled the air as we celebrated everything that makes Kiawah Island special. The event featured representatives of the Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network, Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol, Conservancy Garden Keepers and Charleston Collegiate Outdoor Program as well as education about the bird conservation efforts with the Kiawah Island Shorebird Stewardship and Town of Kiawah Island Bird Research Programs. Guests were encouraged to get a feel for wildlife with the SC Aquarium Rovers Touch Tank and enjoy an Art Walk with the Kiawah Art Guild, a Photography walk with the Kiawah Island Photography Club, the Roots & Shoots Native Plant Sale and the Rosebank Farms Farmers Market.
